A coverstitch machine is different to a regular sewing machine, because it helps you use the cover stitch to finish off hems and other sewing projects.

This cannot be done by a traditional sewing machine.

If you’re wondering whether an overlocker does the same thing, an overlocker is also known as a serger machine. Overlockers and sergers can do a cover stitch however the machine needs to have its settings changed to do this, and it doesn’t have a free arm so you can’t work on things such as a sleeve or a pant leg.

It’s much better to have both an overlocker and a coverstitch machine so that each machine is set up and ready to use and you save time and effort having to change settings. With two machines, you move between the two as needed.

In this article, we look at the best coverstitch machines to buy in the U.K.

Best Coverstitch Machine U.K.:

Bernina Bernette B44 Overlock & Chainstitch Coverstitch Machines

Bernina is a well-known brand in the world of sewing, and it’s Bernina Bernette B44 overlocker is a great introduction machine to the world of overlockers and makes it to my list of the best coverstitch machine UK.

This is an overlocker that can be used by experienced and beginner sewing enthusiasts. It’s very easy to set up and follow.

It has 15 stitches that use either 2, 3 or 4 threads that allow you to use it for a wide range of sewing projects. If you need to use it for rolled hems, you can achieve a professional finish with a width of up to 1.5mm.

Forget about headaches from threading a machine- the Bernina Bernette has a colour-coded threading system so you know exactly what you need to do. There’s a separate needle threader and lower looper threading mechanism to make this easy.

The Bernina Bernette works up to 1300 stitches per minute. This isn’t as fast as a Juki MCS 1500 coverstitch sewing machine but it is still a very good speed for professional sewing.

The adjustable differential feed allows you to make adjustments depending on the type of fabric you’re working with, with a range between 0.6 and 2.

The Janome CoverPro 900cpx is a great coverstitch machine for those who are new to overlockers and need a coverstitch machine that’s easy to use and does the job well.

This probably isn’t a great machine for those who work on advanced projects, because it is limited to only 3 threads not 4, so there might be limitations if you work on a variety of projects.

But in terms of setting up the coverstitch machine and ease of use, this is perfect for beginners and intermediates.

The Janome cover pro 1000cpx sews up to 1000 stitches per minute which makes it much slower than the Bernina Bernette which is at 1300 spm and the Juki mcs 1500 which works up to 1500spm. But this might not be a big deal if you sew for fun or are still new to sewing.

When it comes to choosing the perfect stitch and stitch settings there is a quick reference chart on the front of the coverstitch machine so that you can set up your stitches without needing to refer to the manual. What a great time-saving idea!

Janome has something that it calls an exclusive seam tightening system that helps reduce slack in the looper thread, so that you have nice and tight stitches regardless of the fabric you’re working with.

The available stitch width is up to 5mm and the coverstitch machine can be used with 1 or 2 needles, with a maximum of 3 threads. The stitch length is between 1mm and 4mm and the differential feed ratio is between 0.5 and 2.25.
