Brother 1034d Review : Introduction

For those who are new to sewing and serging, a serger is a special machine that’s created for you to finish edges and hems on your sewing project. A serger machine such as the Brother 1034d helps take your sewing to the next level, and gives it a professional look and finish.

A serger is a great investment if you’re an advanced sewing enthusiast or if you’re going professional and selling your garments and sewing projects. The same kind of finish can’t be created using a standard sewing machine.

brother 1034d reviewThe Brother 1034d has 22 built-in stitch functions and allows you to perform simple and basic tasks such as narrow hems, rolled hems, joining laces, creating ruffles and decorative edges and serging spaghetti straps.

With a Brother 1034d serger machine, you can create professional-looking formal wear and bridal wear, as well as work on home décor and crafting projects. You can also use different fabrics that you might otherwise have problems with when using a regular sewing machine. This includes knitted and stretchy fabrics.

Now that you have a general overview of the Brother 1034d and what a serger machine can be used for, let’s take a more detailed look at the Brother 1034d, what it can and can’t do, and some frequently asked questions!

Threading Options

If you’re new to sewing, or you’re getting older and your eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be, you might be itching to buy a machine that has automatic threading!

Unfortunately, the Brother 1034d doesn’t have automatic threading.

But the good news is that the Brother 1034d isn’t hard to thread. In fact, after a few attempts, you’ll find it quite easy. The machine has color-coded, lay-in threading that has easy-to-understand pictures every step of the way.

Just follow each step carefully, and don’t be impatient as this is when you’ll make mistakes!

If you’re still finding it frustrating, follow a Youtube video such as the one I’ve included below:

Make sure you turn the power off before threading, and you can use the threading tool that comes in the accessories.

The order that you need to thread is as follows: 1. Upper looper 2. Lower looper 3. Right/inside needle 4. Left/outside needle. It’s important to thread in this order.

Otherwise, just look at the picture guides that shows you where you need to thread each of the four threads.

Stitching Options

Using the presser feet that’s included with your purchase of the Brother 1034d, you can work with the following stitches:

  • 4 thread overlock
  • 3 thread overlock
  • narrow hem
  • rolled hem
  • ribbon lock

There are optional extra feet that you can purchase, and with those you can also perform a:

  • pin tuck
  • blind hemming
  • flat lock

You’ll need to purchase the additional Brother SA212 Serger Elastic Application Foot for elastic applications and for reinforced tape.

You can work on formal and bridal wear projects, and create soft gatherings and other complex stitching, such as in this photo.

Other possibilities include:

  • fabric flowers
  • flatlock applique
  • shirring stitch
  • scarf edged rolled hem
  • spaghetti straps

Differential Feed

You can adjust the differential feed on your Brother 1034d when you’re working with knits and stretchy fabrics to prevent waves and bumps while working on your project.

This helps give your garment a professional finish. The differential feed ratio is 0.7 to 2.0, and can be adjusted manually.

Removable Arm

When you’re sewing cylindrical projects such as pants and sleeves, you’ll want to remove the arm of the Brother 1034D. Not all sergers have a removable arm, so this is a handy feature.

Retractable Knife Blade

The retractable knife blade trims the edges of the fabric before being serged, giving your garment a clean edge. This is what makes a serger different to a regular sewing machine. If you don’t want to trim the edge, the knife blade can be switched off. This prevents you from accidentally cutting your fabric when you’re working close to the edges of rolled hems.

Adjustable Foot Pressure

You can adjust the pressure of the foot presser. This is important so that you have high quality stitching regardless of the type of fabric you use. You need different pressure depending on whether you’re working with heavy or light fabrics. When working with light fabrics, you’ll want to reduce the pressure to prevent puckering and to sew curves.

Safety Feature

Especially important is the safety feature that prevents you from operating the machine when the cover is open. I really like this feature!

Built-in Storage Features

If you’re like me, things can quickly get messy when you’re sewing and crafting. That’s why it’s great that the Brother 1034d has built-in storage. You can keep your accessories neatly stored on the front panel flip-down door. While serging, you can collect trim by using the removable trim trap , which can also be used to store the foot controller.

I like that the Brother 1034d comes with a universal hard cover. This is a worthwhile accessory to own because it protects your machine when it’s not being used. You don’t want to leave your machine gathering dust, as this effects its performance. It also keeps your craft room looking neat and tidy. A hard cover also makes it easy for you to move your serger.
